Expected results.
General expectations from the project
- To change attitudes & behaviors.
- To raise awareness about age discrimination and sexuality of older people, including LGBTI.
- To encourage the political and social discussion.
- To encourage the report of cases of discrimination.
- To reduce inequalities and discrimination in attendance of public services and health and social care.
Main project activities
1. Develop a raising awareness campaign in 6 EU Member States with multimedia and face-to-face actions, targeting different groups in the society.
2. Adapt and develop an innovative face-to-face intervention programme with health and social professionals to mitigate stereotypes and negative attitudes regarding sexuality in old age, including LGBTI.
3. Implement a pilot, including the training courses for facilitators. All these activities will contribute on making the issues of discrimination visible and present in the society, and so contributing to raising awareness about it, and to the appreciation of the rights of older people and LGBTI.
Through the project, we aim to support social and healthcare providers to be more aware of LGBTI elders specific needs as well as about their experiences of rejection, discrimination, hostility and fear. If social and healthcare professionals – and the community in general - can incorporate sensitivity toward LGBTI elders into their practice, it should result in increased equal treatment of LGBTI elders when they require help in later life. Additionally, LGBTI elders will have less fear of coming out in these settings if they know that those taking care of them are sensitive to and knowledgeable about their particular needs and issues.

Best4OlderLGBTI expects to have an impact on a wide range of target groups, including NGO’s, health/social care professionals, stakeholders, general public.
NGOs': increase their knowledge about older sexuality and older LGBTI, their rights, needs, good practices in the non-discrimination field; to be more aware of inequalities in the attendance of older people; to have insight on when personnel are having discriminatory and stereotyped behaviour and attitudes and help to change that behaviour; to adopt an anti-discrimination policy, knowing how to and encouraging the report of discriminatory attitudes. Some of the NGOs manage a residential home for elderly, and we hope that achieving the previous results and being more conscious on the specific needs of older LGBTI, will encourage tolerant and friendly environments, promoting diversity management in services.
Health/social professionals: we expect to mitigate stereotypes and negative attitudes regarding sexuality in old age through the intervention programme and raising campaign. With this we hope to assure the respect of the rights of older LGBTI and that their specific needs are recognized and addressed, contribute for equality in access and attendance.
Professionals and the community in general: can incorporate sensitivity toward LGBTI elders into their practice, it should result in increased equal treatment of LGBTI elders when they require help in later life.
LGBT older people: will greatly benefit from the project, with a more respectful society, greater acceptance, better services, and also feeling and being more empowered and confident to demand their rights and to be treated as equal citizens.
Older people: will see their sexuality being more accepted by society, free of prejudice and stigma based on age.
The project partners: will enhance their knowledge about sexuality and older LGBTI and skills on intervene and advocacy this issues by reinforcing networking, particularly along the 16 moments of mutual learning and cooperation, sharing and exploring good practices and knowledge, internalizing the deliverables and being more equipped for raising awareness.
